Much of the equipment in Somalia, including vehicles, generators, solar systems, radios and laptops, is bought by UN agencies, NGOs and government programmes and must be accounted for until it is handed over. We print aluminium barcode asset tags for these organisations in Nairobi, where many of them have support offices, and fly them to Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Garowe and Kismayo.
Because a lot of Somalia programming is run from Nairobi, teams can often collect tags from our workshop and carry them with the rest of their shipment.
Donor accountability and hand-overs
Equipment bought with donor money has to be traceable through the life of a programme and accounted for at closure, when assets are transferred to partners or the government. Tags that carry the implementing agency, the donor and a unique number make each transfer list checkable. Public institutions building up their registers are audited by the Office of the Auditor General. See our guide to fixed asset verification.
Recommended asset tags for Somalia
| Asset | Recommended tag | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solar panels, inverters and batteries | Riveted aluminium or laser marking | Survives extreme sun and heat on rooftops and masts |
| Generators and water pumps | Thick aluminium, riveted | Resists heat, vibration and diesel |
| Laptops, phones and radios | tamper-proof tags | Shows if a tag has been lifted from portable items |
| Vehicles | Aluminium tag with QR code | Quick to scan during fleet checks |

Heat, sun and coastal air
Somalia is hot year-round, with intense sun inland and humid, salty air in Mogadishu, Kismayo and Bosaso. Printed stickers fade and peel within months. Anodized aluminium seals the print under the surface so UV cannot reach it, and it does not corrode in salt air. For outdoor equipment we recommend rivets or screws as well as adhesive. More on why anodized aluminium lasts.

Somali, Arabic or English
Most agencies print English, and some add Somali or Arabic. Arabic is printed right to left, so send the text as a file rather than retyped and check the proof carefully. Showing the donor's name on the tag also makes it clear to communities and staff who funded the item.

Delivery to Somalia
Air freight from Nairobi serves Mogadishu, Hargeisa and other cities, and many agencies move tags with their own cargo from their Nairobi offices. Somalia joined the EAC in 2024 and is still bringing in the customs union rules, so your logistics team or clearing agent should confirm current duty and documents. Send your quantity, logo and number format by WhatsApp or email. You will get a quote and a free digital proof before anything is printed.

Frequently asked questions
Can we collect tags in Nairobi and send them with our own cargo?
Yes. Many Somalia programmes are supported from Nairobi, so collection from our workshop is common.
Which tags survive the heat on solar installations?
Riveted anodized aluminium or laser-marked plates. The print is sealed under the surface, so sun does not fade it.
Can tags include Arabic or Somali?
Yes. Send the exact text as a file; Arabic is printed right to left and you check it on a proof before production.
Can tags show the donor's name?
Yes. Implementing agency and donor names are often printed together with the asset number.
